Today for Mad Science we made lava lamps using a few basic household items:
Fill a cup about 1/2 way with vegetable oil, then pour about a 1/4 of water into your oil, then lastly, add in your alkaseltzer pieces bit by bit and watch what happens.

As the year goes on, many conversations will be had about dressing for the weather and the activities we wish to participate in. In order to know each child's threshold for cold, wet, and warmth, the children will need to challenge the limits of their clothing. Are you comfortable? How do you feel? Can you tell me how it happened?
This will be the first of many puddle jumping session at Natoaganeg School :)

The first puddle jumping of the school year began slow. The kiddos enjoyed walking through the ditch with their "fast blue boots." It is always interesting to watch the kids interact with mother nature. Knowing that it had rained the night before, I was prepared to encounter some water, however, I didn't want to predict or assume how the kids would react to the water in their play space. Today's goal was to just let the event play out and check in with the kids from time to time. Mary-Dale and I watched as they jumped and splashed and could see their cares slowly slipping away - are our teachers really letting us do this?

As we begin to spend more time in the woods, I pack up our wagon full of a few necessary tools. Here are some of the boys working together to get the wagon to the top of the hill.

This week our basecamp got a major over haul thanks to some members of our community grounds crew - thank you so much!!! The tall grass was cleared, our trails were rid of some bothersome branches, and the burdocks and prickly branches are gone. On Friday, the K4 got to work removing some of the branches from our campsite - such great helpers! Things are coming together :)

Felt boards and felt pieces are a great early literacy tool to get children excited and engaged in storytelling or rather, the re-telling of a familiar story, poem, or song. Currently on our felt board, I have out the felt pieces for the 5 Little Monkey's. Today we observed Weston quietly re-telling the 5 Little Monkey's poem to himself. He was doing so well, I thought I'd give him a little music to make his story come alive and I pulled up our favorite 5 Little Monkey's video on youtube for him to follow along with. Great job kiddo :)

Another successful science experiment completed! Today we made dancing milk. All you need for this experiment is pie plate, whole milk (must be whole milk), an assortment of food colouring, q-tip, and preferably Dawn dish liquid. Fill the bottom of your pie plate with milk, add a few drops of food colouring, coat one end of your q-tip in the dish liquid, and then dip the q-tip into the center of your pie plate - what happens?
When we complete our experiments, we do our best to fill the role of a scientist by using the language and asking great questions and making observations. The children are getting better at making hypothesis and describe what they see. In this video clip I have captured the children's excitement. After they made the milk dance, they very much enjoyed mixing the milk and making new colours. Way to go little scientists!
