As part of Aboriginal Peoples Television Network’s (APTN) National Aboriginal Day celebrations, APTN is excited to once again launch its annual Aboriginal Day Live Flag Contest, inviting all young people ages 12 to 17 years to design a flag reflecting their perspectives on the richness and diversity of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples. This is an excellent opportunity for your students to tap into their imaginations to create something original that shows their pride in the culture and heritage of Aboriginal Peoples. APTN is encouraging students to create a flag that represents all of Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples and illustrates what National Aboriginal Day means to them.APTN will fly the contest winner and his/her parent/guardian to Winnipeg, Manitoba to join APTN’s Aboriginal Day Live celebrations on or about June 23, 2012. During the live broadcast of the show, we will unveil the flag and introduce the artist on national television. The winning flag will be flown on top of APTN’s national headquarters in downtown Winnipeg and the winner will receive a cash prize of $500. As an added bonus, if the winner’s submission is part of a class project, the winner’s school will receive a $750 cash prize towards the purchase of learning materials. Last year’s winning entry by 17-year-old artist Taylor Vanasse was chosen from a total of 228 entries received from across Canada. Her artwork incorporated a variety of vibrant symbols that represented Aboriginal Peoples as a whole.The deadline for entries is May 18, 2012 at midnight eastern time. Entries should reflect the rich diversity of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada.
